Heilenman, Gravereaux lead girls past Trojans
The Emmaus girls swimming program won the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference championship with a superlative effort Feb. 14 against rival Parkland, 113-73. With the win, the Green Hornets finished the season undefeated (11-0) and 11-2 overall.
In defeating their Cedar Crest Boulevard antagonists, Emmaus won eight of 12 events. The Hornets opened the meet by claiming the top two spots in the medley relay for an early 12-2 lead in team points.
Emmaus had the top two finishers in four of the meet’s nine individual events and took first place in all three relays, with Hornet teams finishing in two of the top three spots in all of the relays.
The Hornets’ Chelsea Gravereaux and Abby Heilenman both took first place each of the four times they dove into the pool last Thursday.
There was plenty of outstanding teamwork when Katie Champagne, Lauren Sharp, Gravereaux and Heilenman earned first in the 200 medley relay, registering a time of 1:48.41. The Green Hornets also finished second in that competition, as the team of Bella Buchman, Chloe Vlaeminck, Mya Puentes and Maggie Champagne finished the race at 1:53.70.
Coach Tim O’Connor’s squad also took the 200 free relay as Peyton Rautzhan, Maggie Champagne, Gravereaux and Heilenman with a 1:39.66 mark. Finally, Avery King, Katie Champagne, Gravereaux and Rautzhan displayed fine swimming to win the 400 free relay at 3:39.30.
Individually, Heilenman, a senior, took first place both of her individual events. She won the 50 free in 25.03, just barely ahead of teammate Rautzhan at 25.35. Heilenman also took first place in the 100 freestyle in 54.5.
Gravereaux, who was part of three winning relay teams, won the 100 fly at 57.72 ahead of teammate Mya Puentes at 1:01.46. The 100 backstroke was won by Katie Champagne at 59.80, with Puentes claiming third place at 1:04.44, just behind Parkland’s Devon Corvaia who touched in at 104.09. Emmaus’ Lauren Sharp was sharp in the 100 breaststroke, taking first place at 1:09.14. She was joined in the winner’s circle with teammates Chloe Vlaeminck (1:10.29) and Laryssa White (1:12.83).
Other solid performances were turned in by Katie Champagne and Lauren Sharp who finished second and third, respectively, behind Parkland’s Ally Lin in the 200 IM with times of 2:13.20 and 2:15.47. Also, Reilly King performed well in the 500 free, finishing second to Lin with a time of 5:19.83.
