Britton to help bolster Kids lineup

After a week off following their stirring run to a second-place finish in the AAA state dual meet tournament, the Northampton wrestling team is back in action this weekend.

The following are the Northampton wrestlers who are seeded in the top-8 of their respective weights: 106-Ryan Stilgenbauer 7th, 113-Alex Hanley 5th, 120-Sam Hanley 4th, 132-Julian Chlebove 1st, 138-Devon Britton 1st, 145-Jagger Condomitti 2nd, 152-Mikey Kistler 2nd, 182-Riley Gallagher 7th, 195-Jayden Bortz 2nd, 220-Blake Lambert 4th, 285-Bubba Werkheiser 4th.

All rounds will take place at Liberty High School.

On Friday, the pigtails and preliminary round start at 4 p.m. The quarterfinals are at 6 p.m. The first-round consolations are at 8 p.m.

On Saturday, second-round consolations are at 9 a.m., semifinals and third-round consolations at 10:30 a.m., fourth-round consolations at 1 p.m, third- and fifth- place matches at 4 p.m, and the finals at 5:45 p.m.

While some wrestlers change weight classes for the individual tournament, head coach Seth Lisa hasn’t changed the formula that bought the Kids so much team success this season.

Lisa explained, “Even though your individual goals are on the line, when you’re there cheering and fighting for each other good things can happen. We’re just hoping that we can go out and have 14 guys contribute to that team score. You do your job individually, some of those team things take care of themselves.”

One thing that should help inspire the team is the return of Devon Britton to competition for the Kids. Last year’s third place state finisher at 132 will be back in the lineup for the first time since suffering an injury in January.

Britton expressed confidence that his preparation in practice would be sufficient to allow him to make another deep postseason run.

“I just have to go out there and do what I do,” Britton said. “I wrestle with two-time state champ Julien Chlebove and Jagger Condomitti is just as tough, so I’m not nervous about my training.”

Lisa summed up why so many wrestling fans love this tournament. “Regardless of what the seeds look like, something totally different is going to happen,” Lisa said. “This weekend’s gonna be wild. There’ll be a lot of loud noise coming from that gym.”
