Boys win eight of 12 events to earn league championship

The Emmaus boys swimming team had as close to a perfect day as you can have Feb. 14 at Parkland High School.

The Hornets won eight of 12 events and easily defeated rival Parkland 114-72 . In the process, Emmaus earned the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference title and finished the conference portion of their schedule undefeated.

Out of the gate, the Green Hornets were buzzing around the pool with vim and vigor. The team of Michael Iacobelli, Evan Bova, Gio Germano and Connor Shriver won the 200-medley relay with a time of 1:39.19. Later, the team of Paul Petre, Luke Rautzhan, Shriver and Germano claimed the 400 free relay, checking in at 3:21.76. Emmaus finished second in the 200 free relay as the team of Matt Gertner, Devin Metzger, Nick Soares and Rautzhan registered a mark of 1:32.98

Individually Germano had a great day, claiming the 100 fly in 53.97 and 100 backstroke in 55.64, just finishing less than one second ahead of Parkland’s James Zhang. Metzger also stood out for his pool prowess, as he won the 50 free in 22.25 and the 100 free at 49.70. Teammate Michael Iacobelli also came out on top in the 100 breaststroke, finishing in 1:01.20.

Soares and Rautzhan finished second and third in the 200 free, which was the tightest race of the afternoon. Parkland’s Gavin Webb touched in at 1:47.20, just an eyelash before Soares at 1:47.84 and Rautzhan at 1:47.88, barely denying the Green Hornets a ninth victory. Meanwhile, Evan Bova claimed third in the 200 individual medley at 2:06.56 and Shriver and Iacobelli finished second and third - at 22.80 and 22.90 - behind teammate Metzger to sweep the top three spots in the 50 free. Shriver wasn’t done, claiming second inn the 100 free at 49.82 behind teammate Metzger and ahead of Parkland’s Sidney Webb.

Other Emmaus swimmers also registered solid performances, including Patrick Kuzdzal, who finished second in the 100 fly at 57.26, behind teammate Germano and A.J. Lamack took third in the 100 back at 59.03.

In diving, EPC champ Brendan McCourt displayed skill and technique in claiming first place with a score of 306.50.

McCourt will be back in action Saturday at the District 11 Diving Championships. He’ll try to win another title and earn his team some points heading into the District 11 Swimming Championships, slated for March 1-2.
