Township to replace water, sewer lines

South Whitehall will be undertaking a major project to replace water and sewer lines along Pennsylvania Street between Cedar Crest Boulevard and 28th Street.

Assistant Public Works Manager Jerry Charvala provided an overview of the work during the commissioners Feb. 6 meeting.

“This will involve replacing water main and service lines to the curb stop, sewer main and laterals to the curb line, as well as total street reconstruction,” Charvala said.

A tentative detour plan is proposed to bypass Pennsylvania Street to Fairmount, with enclosure of two blocks at a time.

Temporary asphalt will be used during the project with permanent paving to restore Pennsylvania Street when all lines are in place.

Commissioners suggested working with Parkland School District for alternate bus routes and scheduling considerations not only for the schools but also for commuter times.

Bids are expected to be awarded in March, construction begun in May, and completion in July.

In another matter, commissioners awarded a bid of $550,577 to Wexcon, of Mohrsville, for the Dorney Park Road water main extension project.

The work will be done from Lincoln Avenue to Cedarbrook Road and includes rehabilitation of Dorney Park Road after pipe and hydrant installations, new paved entrances to Dorney Park property, and new shoulders and crosswalk at Lincoln Avenue.

At the end of the meeting, township Manager Renee Bickel announced there was an additional item not listed on the agenda.

Police Chief Glen Dorney then presented a motion to discharge Sgt. Kyle Golden for conduct unbecoming a police officer.

Bickel and Dorney rushed out of the room afterward and declined to speak to The Press that evening or through any later communication concerning the firing.

They also would not provide a copy of the chief’s statement, which he read at the public meeting, saying it would be part of the meeting’s minutes when approved at the next commissioners’ meeting.
