Dr. Charles S. McClain
Dr. Charles S. McClain, 89, of Macungie, died Jan. 28, 2019, at Lehigh Center. He was the beloved husband of Veralee (Hardenburg) McClain to whom he was married for 63 years Aug. 20, 2018. Born in Upper Sandusky, Ohio, he was the son of the late Earl F. and Mary (Mathews) McClain.
He was a graduate of Wooster College, Wooster, Ohio, received his master’s degree from Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y., and his Doctor of Musical Arts from the Eastman School of Music, Rochester, N.Y. Before retiring in 1995, he was a professor of music, head of the music department, choir director and college organist at Muhlenberg College, Allentown, for 25 years. He oversaw the design of the organ for Egner Memorial Chapel and was acting dean of the college in 1974-75. Previously he held positions at Wooster College, Waterloo Lutheran University, Waterloo, Ontario, Morningside College, Sioux City, Ind. and as a church organist for St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Kitchener, Ontario and Trinity Lutheran Church, Sioux City.
He was a member of The Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit, Emmaus.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, where he served as a chaplain’s assistant.
He was a longtime member of the American Guild of Organists and the Organ Historical Society.
He will be remembered as a gentleman who loved the music of Bach, had a passion for teaching and getting to know his students, enjoyed studying genealogy and most importantly spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife; daughter, Marjorie, of Gaithersburg, Md.; sons, Phillip and his wife Janet Hartery, of New Canaan, Conn. and Stephen and his wife Anna Wonaschuetz, of Vienna, Austria; grandchildren Joseph, Christopher, Mariah Hartery and Charles Maximilian. He was predeceased by a brother, Robert and sister, Laura Graham.
