Whitehall officials address traffic concerns

Whitehall Township officials say they have heard some concerns about traffic at the newly opened McDonald’s at the corner of MacArthur and Mechanicsville roads, but there have not been any official complaints.

The McDonald’s opened early last week where, decades ago, Impy’s Mickley Hotel once stood. The newly constructed building has two drive-thrus and entrances on both the southbound side of MacArthur Road and on Mechanicsville Road about a block back from the traffic light. Depending on the time of day, traffic stopped at the light can back up enough to block the entrance/exit of the restaurant.

When news of the fast-food eatery’s opening appeared on social media, many township residents sounded off on the negative, and possibly dangerous, effect the location would have on traffic.

Township police Chief Michael Marks said there have been no accidents or traffic-related complaints at the location.

Whitehall Mayor Michael Harakal Jr. said two issues have been brought to his attention. One issue is the “No U-turn” sign that was in the island of northbound MacArthur Road right before the intersection is missing.

“We don’t know what happened to it, but we do intend to replace it,” he said. “Without it, people are running over the island.”

The other issue is the traffic blocking the McDonald’s entrance on Mechanicsville Road.

“We know it’s a problem, but what we are encountering is people rarely leave an access line into the business in those situations,” Harakal said.

He said there are no signs warning drivers not to block the driveway, but Mechanicsville Road is a state road, and Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is in charge of signage.

“Some things are beyond our control,” Harakal said. “We will pass it along to PennDOT.”
