Kocon named tax collector

Lynn-Anne Kocon, CPA, has been approved by South Whitehall commissioners as interim tax collector to fill the position of Alvin C. Thompson who resigned.

Her appointment will continue until the first Monday in the January following the first municipal election, which is more than 60 days after the vacancy.

Commissioner Matt Mulqueen commented on Kocon’s selection.

“We went through an advertising and interview process,” Mulqueen said. “Lynn-Anne is very enthusiastic. We’re happy to have her a part of the township.”

The tax office will remain along Albright Avenue in Greenawalds.

The board also approved Maryann LeBus and Gerald Labelle Jr. to serve as deputy tax collectors. Effective date for the hirings was Jan. 17.

Director of Township Operations Randy Cope was appointed South Whitehall treasurer to assume the role held by Thompson.

In other business, commissioners approved the purchase of 16 Honda generators at a total cost of $15,639.

The portable units, each with a run time of 10 to 12 hours will be used to keep traffic signals operating during emergencies.

In another matter, permission was granted to Police Chief Glen Dorney to purchase 45 new Tasers for the police department.

Dorney noted the older Tasers now in use are at the end of their life spans and cannot be repaired if broken.

“By upgrading, officer safety will be increased as well as the reliability of lethal force options,” the chief explained.

Dorney reported the $67,255 budgeted for Tasers will cover the first two years of the contract with supplier Axon Enterprise Inc. of Scottsdale, Ariz.

Accessories and instruction certification are included.
