The Northampton varsity swimming and diving team claimed another victory on Tuesday evening against East Stroudsburg North. With both the boys and girls teams winning by significant margins (116-59 for the boys and 143-36 for the girls), Northampton took the majority of first place finishes and all the points in the diving events.
Among the highlights of the evening were dual individual first place finishes from Jack Kennedy (first 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle), Brynne Rockovitz (first 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly), Sarah Hosking (first 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke), and Tommy Nichols (first 500 freestyle and 50 freestyle).
Connor Oswald and Marcus Newhardt swam a tough 500 freestyle took second and third place for Northampton. Diver / swimmer Ben Christy claimed second in the 50 freestyle just four one hundreds of a second off the first-place time.
In the girls 200 freestyle, Morgan Thomas was first to the wall with a time of 2:14.56, in the boys 200 freestyle, Oswald claimed a decisive victory with a time of 2:09.75 and Olivia Szerencsits took first place in the 200 individual medley.
So what has the highlight of this winning season been for Northampton’s head coach Cullen Mentzell?
“For the entire team, a highlight has been the versatility of the swimmers,” explained Mentzell. “We’ve been racing a lot of different strokes and that’s given us a lot of depth in terms of the swimmers we have to compete in each event.”
The Kids will have an opportunity to show the depth of their team’s ability Thursday night as they travel to Whitehall High School for a Cement Belt showdown with this local rival. Thursday’s meet begins at 4 p.m.
