Sophs look to make impact

Derek Troxell and Derek George both envision themselves, and the rest of their sophomore class, being a force in the Colonial League in the next two years.

In the meantime, both are learning and working their way as starters through a transition year for the Roughies in which they had one win (1-13) entering play this week. Troxell has been averaging roughly 10 points per game, and George approximately nine per contest. George had 21 and 22 in his last two games, both career highs at the time.

Yet, both players have been encouraged by the team’s overall play in recent weeks. The Roughies lost three of their last four games by four points or less.

“We have a lot of young guys and we are learning to win,” said Troxell, who has handled guard and forward positions this season. “We really didn’t have a lot of guys with varsity experience.

“We are better playing lately as we have slot some tough games. We lost one game at the buzzer and it can be frustrating. But we all know we are getting better. We began the year getting blown out in games.”

George has been developing as the team’s center, and he had progressed into a consistent force in the paint with his 6-foot-3 frame.

“I believe that I have adapted well,” said George. “I know I have to use my size and speed down low.

“It has been frustrating because we have been playing team tough and we come up short. The seniors have been a big help to the younger guys.”

Head coach Eric Snyder believes his young duo has a bright future.

“Derek (Troxell) is a very smart player and knows the game,” said Snyder. “He anticipates well on defense and is an excellent passer. (Troxell) also is a good shooter.

“Derek (George) has been improving every day and has developed a 15-foot jumper, and he has rebounded well all year. He has performed above and beyond what I expected.”

Troxell, though, is a bit heartbroken due to the fact that he wasn’t able to play with older brother Devon, a senior, who suffered a knee injury in the Thanksgiving Day game and was lost for the season.

He has drawn motivation from his parents, Dave and Gretchen, and has stayed focused through the memory of his cousin Carol Troxell, who passed away a year ago.

“It was very difficult to see my brother get hurt and then know we couldn’t play together his final year,” said the younger Troxell. “But he is always there for me and has really helped.

“My parents tell me just to do my best whenever I am out there. They are always at my games and always there. I am always playing hard for my cousin and I won’t forget her.”

George has been propelled by teammates seniors Andrew and D’Angelo Martinez.

“Both of them have been a big presence,” said George. “They have given me confidence and there are just there. Andrew has influenced me a lot.

Troxell and George are both confident their class will make a difference.

“We have a lot of guys with height and talent,” said George. “We will have a good team in the next few years.

“We all have been playing together for a long time,” added Troxell. “We have good chemistry and we will stay together. We have high expectations for our junior and senior years. It will be about us making districts and winning a title.”

Derek Troxell is averaging about 10 points a game this year.
