LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Rushatz likes to make sure she keeps busy

On a typical winter night, Lexi Rushatz is returning home from a traveling soccer practice after basketball practice.

It is just another athletic-filled day for the Catasauqua sophomore.

“It (soccer) is usually one or two nights a week,” said Rushatz. “I play soccer the whole year. I enjoy all the sports I play and I don’t really get tired.

“I need to keep busy.”

Busy can be an understatement.

After a successful cross country season in which she ended with an 11th place finish in districts, Rushatz has been the point guard and leading scorer on the basketball team on which she is averaging close to 10 points per game.

She had a career-high 20 points earlier this season.

Rushatz has adjusted well to a leadership role. She has maintained his stance despite the team struggling with an overall 1-11 mark entering this week.

“I don’t mind being a leader out there,” she said. “We are a pretty young team and we’re learning. I try to do whatever I can and talk to the younger girls. Our seniors have really done a great job.

“It has been a different approach by the coaches this year. Our practices have been very competitive and

Head coach Mark Seremula realizes he has a special type of player in his program.

“She is the first one in (the gym) and the last one out,” said Seremula about Rushatz. “She does a nice job handling the ball while being guarded by the team’s best defender.

“She has a great work ethic and has done a great job scoring even though the other team is focused on her. She tries to get better every time she is in the gym.”

Her parents, Todd and Wendy, has been a huge influence in her career. In fact, her father suggested she try soccer.

“My dad told me to give it a try and I liked it a lot,” said Rushatz. “He always has been pushing me and wanting me to get better. Both of my parents have really helped.”

Rushatz also credits the support of sister Alyssa, a 2017 Catty graduate who played basketball and soccer and ran cross country.

“She was a big influence because when I saw her playing sports when I was younger, I decided I wanted to try them as well. That is how I found my love for sports.

“She was always encouraging me to push myself. When she went out for cross country in her senior year, I realized I really wanted to run cross country.”

As expected, Rushatz would like to stay involved with sports as well as pursue a law degree.

“I want to go to college and play sports,” said Rushatz. “I’m not sure what sports I would play.

“I would like to be a lawyer, especially a civil litigator.”

When she isn’t playing sports, Rushatz has found a totally different outlet.

“I like to bake cupcakes,” she said. “I made some for the holidays. It is really different than sports.”

However, Rushatz doesn’t need any escapes from the game.

“I don’t really get tired of it,” she said. “I just enjoy competing and being involved. It keeps me going.”

Fortunately for her teams, Rushatz keeps moving forward.
