Kids rout Emmaus in wrestling

While the Northampton wrestling team’s 81-0 dual meet win over a three-win Pocono Mountain West squad the previous night wasn’t much of a surprise, Emmaus figured to provide a tougher test when they rolled into Pete Schneider Gymnasium on Thursday.

The 7-4 Green Hornets were coming off a win over PMW the previous week by a score of 66-12.

The Kids rolled to a 74-0 triumph that featured eight falls and two tech falls. Emmaus managed a total of two takedowns during the meet.

The Green Hornets did manage to score the first takedown of the night, 24 seconds into the 113-pound bout. It would be the only lead Emmaus would have in any bout. Alex Hanley then proceeded to score the next 16 points, including 11 near-fall points, before finishing off his opponent at the 4:47 mark with a pin.

At 120 pounds, Noah Reichelderfer used a six-point second period that included a near-fall to earn a 6-1 decision.

Ethan Szerencsits also had a three-point near-fall in the second period as he rolled to a 15-6 major decision at 126.

Blaise Wagner took down his 132-pound opponent at the 30-second mark of the first period. He worked the top position for two near-fall points before finishing in style with a fall with 17 seconds remaining in the period.

Julian Chlebove was his characteristically, dominating self as he narrowly missed a fall in the second period on his way to a 21-6 tech fall at 5:47.

Jagger Condomitti continued an impressive sophomore campaign at 145 pounds by chalking up 11 first period points before putting the clamps on a pin a minute into the second period.

Mikey Kistler’s opponent at 152 got a good view of the single light above the floor as the referee slapped the mat with 10 seconds to go in the first period.

At 160 pounds, Erik Schreck piled up 12 near-fall points on his way to 16-0 tech fall at 25 seconds into the third period.

Traisach Roland used a takedown in the first and a reversal in the second to earn a 4-2 decision at 170. Highly-touted junior Caden Wright did not wrestle for Emmaus.

Riley Gallagher recorded a fall 54 seconds into the second period after having built a 9-2 lead in his 182-pound bout.

Jayden Bortz won by forfeit at 195.

The 220-pound bout went to Blake Lambert by fall with 33 seconds remaining in the second period.

Fan-favorite Bubba Werkheiser pinned his opponent a minute and 30 seconds into his heavyweight bout.

At 106 pounds, in the last bout of the night, Ryan Stilgenbauer recorded the fastest of Northampton’s eight falls. He needed only 36 seconds to end his bout and the meet.

Over the weekend the Kids participated in the Escape the Rock tournament. Northampton finished tied for fifth as team. Other local teams that competed: Becahi 1st, Stroudsburg 9th, Easton 24th, Parkland 42nd.

Julian Chlebove was the champion at 132 pounds. Other individual place winners were: Condomitti 5th at 145, Kistler 6th at 152, and Alex Hanley 8th at 113.

As the regular season winds to a close, thoughts now turn to the upcoming District XI tournaments.

Head coach Seth Lisa provided the following update on the possible return of Devon Britton to the lineup.

“It’s kind of up in the air,” Lisa said. “He’s on the mend right now. His leg is getting better. His timeline to return is right before districts, so we’re all hoping for a swift recovery.”

As preposterous as it might sound, Northampton is currently ranked fifth in the District XI power rankings as of Jan. 18. Because Easton is holding down the third seed despite having not defeated any of the top-4 teams, the Kids could be looking at a four vs. five quarterfinal matchup with Bethlehem Catholic in the District Duals. Liberty and Nazareth occupy the top two spots as of this writing.
