Girls fall to Moravian Academy, Falcons

On Thursday night at Catasauqua High School the Rough Rider’s girls basketball team looked to pick up their second win of the season against the visiting Lions of Moravian Academy.

The task proved to be too tall as the presence of Moravian Academy’s 6-4 center Maya Ettle presented an insurmountable matchup problem, especially for Madison Hicks on the opening tip.

Head coach Mark Seremula thought the Roughs acquitted themselves well.

“We did a good job on the big girl. We didn’t give up any penetration. The defense was good. We rebounded really well. The 34 (points allowed) is amazing; the 19 (points scored), not so amazing.”

The Roughs started well on the strength of five, first quarter points by Julia Lacey. Catty was leading 7-6 with a minute to go until the buzzer when a Lion three-pointer gave Moravian Academy the lead.

Lions scored the first seven points of the second quarter on the way to winning it 9-3 to take an 18-10 lead at the half.

A Lacey three-pointer and a Taylor Richards field goal got Catty to within three points early in the third quarter. Unfortunately, the Richards field goal would be the last points for the Roughs in the quarter and their last field goal of the game. Moravian Academy led 27-15 after the third.

The Roughs were limited to four free throws for their scoring in the final period while the Lions added seven points to finish the scoring at 34-19.

With Ettle looming in the paint, the Roughs were held to 4-of-25 shooting from two-point range. The shots from beyond the arc weren’t falling either. Lacey made the only 2-of-15 shots taken by the team.

Lacey led the Roughs with nine points. Amy Huber scored two points and added an energetic spark off the bench by grabbing seven rebounds and three steals. Lexi Rushatz did most of the ball handling work and was the second leading scorer with four points. Hicks snagged six rebounds and two steals in her contribution to the cause.

Catty fell at home to Salisbury, 36-33. Hicks led the way with nine points while Rushatz added eight and Allanah George had seven. The Falcons were led by Madison Bettuccio who had 18 and Quinn Wittnian had 13.
