Former borough municipal building sold

At Catasauqua Borough Council’s regular meeting Jan. 7, council approved an ordinance to sell the former municipal building at 118 Bridge St.

The upper floors of the building had been used by Lehigh County Housing Authority for low-income tenants. The building was transferred to the housing authority to allow the current and any future residents to continue in rent-subsidized apartments. The ordinance confirming the sale offered no projection on the future use of the space once occupied by the borough’s municipal offices and council meeting room.

The sale was a no bid event because state law allows for governmental agencies to transfer properties without bids for an agreed-upon price at or near the appraised value of the property.

As part of the new calendar year, council set the time and place for meetings. The schedule is unchanged from the end of 2018. Workshops and executive sessions are held the last Monday of the month, and regular meetings are held on the first Monday of the month. All meetings are set to begin 7 p.m. in council chambers at the new municipal complex, 90 Bridge St. Workshop sessions are an open format and allow time for residents with detailed questions to be answered in an informal dialogue.

As part of the reorganization process for 2019, council approved Dimmich & Dinkelacker PC as the borough solicitor with a new fee agreement. France, Anderson, Basile & Company’s contract for auditing services was renewed. Remington & Vernick Engineers was appointed to provide engineering services to the wastewater treatment plant. The borough authority has two vacancies, but the board seldom meets.

The planning commission reappointed Josh May, with a term expiring in May 2022.

Hannah Haubert resigned from the planning commission. Her term expires in May 2020. There is a vacancy on the commission to fill the remaining term. Interested residents should contact Steve Travers, borough manager, if interested.
