Winter has finally rolled into Moravian Academy, where things are heating up. Midterms are almost here, and everyone is getting ready for them. Students are anxiously asking teachers what’s going to be on the test to find the best way to prepare themselves.
Even with the lack of snow, you can tell that winter is here at Moravian. Almost everyone is bundled up, and/or holding a hot thermos of tea, coffee or some hot beverage. It has even been heard of someone drinking some warm tea that was mixed with coffee!
Lately, Moravian celebrated a recent win against Colonial League Champion, Bangor, bringing Moravian’s boys basketball team into a 10-0 season. The game was exciting and constantly had the fans on the edge of their seats. Moravian beat Bangor with a buzzer-beating shot, ending the game with a score of 66-65 and breaking Bangor’s winning streak.
The swim team also has had a great season, with a 4-0 score for both the boys’ and girls’ teams.
The school robotics team (Team 5490; AKA the Dark Byte) has just begun its 2019 season in the FIRST Robotics Competition, sponsored by Boeing. Team 5490 started the year with a launch party, which really helped spread the news about the team. On Jan. 5, a classroom full of people waited in anticipation for the clock to strike 10:30, which is when the details about the competition this year were to be announced. Now, every day, they get new recruits showing up, asking for a place on the team, to which they are accepted with open arms.
This year, the FIRST Robotics Competition theme is “Deep Space” in honor of the 50th anniversary of the 1969 moon landing. Teams are faced with various tasks, ranging from delivering packages to the spaceships, to climbing up onto the 6-inch high finishing platform.
“I am extremely excited for this year. We have a great design for our robot and the challenge is also very interesting too.” says co-leader Jack Lutostansky (Class of 2019). As we can see, this year’s team is ready to face the challenge.
On the topic of upcoming events, Moravian Academy will again be showcasing some of its many talents in a few weeks. On Jan. 27, Moravian Academy will be hosting its annual Red and Gold Recital, comprised of many talented students performing different pieces of music, ranging from piano to violin. You can get your tickets online at Moravian Academy’s website, but be quick! They will be sure to run out as it gets closer to the date of the show.
This New Year at Moravian has been full of fun, and we can’t wait for it to start to snow.
