John Frost Hartman Jr.

John Frost Hartman Jr., 68, died peacefully Nov. 18, 2018, surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Pamela (Osborn) Hartman. Born in Allentown, he was the son of Mary Hartman and the late John Hartman.

As a child, he trapped in the Pennsylvania woods, helping his family through the sales of pelts. In high school, he played varsity football for the Emmaus Hornets.

After serving in the Air Force, he worked as an arborist alongside other adventurous coworkers. Never judging, he befriended and led even the roughest souls to trust in Christ.

He eventually moved his family to Bozeman, Mont., where he and his repeatedly terrified son underwent several hunting-related near death experiences, including being surrounded by an actual pack of wolves, being dragged sideways up a mountainside by a four-wheeler and surviving a Western-style, guns-drawn standoff –which he nonchalantly talked everyone out of.

He is survived by his mother; wife; sons, Seth and Kyle; daughters, Amber Brady and Kristen Smillie; sisters, Mary Jane Unger, Linda Confer, Sandra Zettlemoyer and Patricia Sourwine. He was predeceased by his father and brother, Rick.

Contributions may be made to the Salt Lake City VA Fisher House, 690 S. Valdez Drive, Salt Lake City, UT 84148.

A memorial will be held at his Montana ranch in the spring of 2019.
