Joe Tognoli and Jeanine Craver welcomed Todd Brosky and his son Scott to Catasauqua Community Food Bank Dec. 14. Todd and Scott, of Brosky Insurance Agency Inc., presented a check for $12,500 to the food bank.

“Every year, Erie Insurance has a charity golf tournament. We all chip in to play. This year, we won the tournament, and one of the players was closest to the pin. He missed a hole-in-one by 3 inches,” Todd Brosky said.

Todd and Scott are the first to admit that if the food bank had to rely on their golfing skills, there would be a lot of hungry people.

“We have a couple of very talented golfers who play for us in the tournament,” Todd Brosky said. Whatever the team wins gets donated to the food bank.

“We have been blessed to be in a community like this that cares so much for the people who live here,” Craver said.

The food bank’s store is in a building that John Landi of Pies On Pizzeria and his family donated to the food bank.

“When we had a problem with the old oil furnace, we had a new one donated to us,” Craver said.

The food bank has been at its new location on Front Street for five years.

Brosky’s check will help serve the growing clientele. Customers who use the food bank are restricted to one day a month and need to prove they need the assistance.

“We have lots of help from area businesses. Egypt Star Bakery, the Giant in Coplay and BJ’s send their surplus to us. We have been with Second Harvest since 1989,” Tognoli said.

The food bank also gets food from donation drives at Sheckler Elementary School, local Boy Scout groups and mail carriers.

“Local churches help us out, and lately, we received donations from the concerts in the park,” Craver said.

The food bank is always looking for volunteers.

“Some of our volunteers are getting older, so we need some younger folks to get interested,” Tognoli said.

Every third Wednesday, the truck comes in from Second Harvest to unload.

In November, the food bank served 155 households - serving 223 adults, 129 children and 55 elderly individuals. The food bank added 10 new families.
