K-Kid boy swimmers remain unbeaten

The Northampton swim teams continued a strong start to the season with a double win at their first away meet against Freedom last Thursday night.

While the winning streak continued for the boys squad in another home contest on Tuesday evening against Central; for the girls, they faced their first loss to the Vikings by a close score of 94-89.

Going into their first away meet last Thursday the Northampton was ready for a tough competition.

“We’re just trying to mix things up,” explained Northampton’s head coach Cullen Mentzell. “I’m trying to let swimmers swim different races and not get stuck in the same events.”

This philosophy to let the team spread their ‘water wings’ in a variety of different strokes and events seems to be working well for Northampton as Sarah Hosking, Brynne Rockovits, Tommy Nicol, Olivia Szerencsits and Bryce Fisher all claimed first place wins in each of the individual events they swam against Freedom. Northampton swimmers also achieved district championship qualifying times in 12 events at the Freedom meet. While the girls team claimed a decisive 102-82 win over the Freedom Patriots, the meet for the Northampton boys came down to the final event (the 400 freestyle relay). The Northampton team of Jack Kennedy, Tommy Nicols, Bryce Fisher and DJ Fragano needed the first-place win in the relay event which would net the team 8 total points and a win for the meet.

Facing some tough competition from the Freedom team, the Kids came off the blocks strong and secured an early lead which they continued to build upon as the event progressed. In the final leg of the relay, Freedom found a burst of energy and began to close in on Northampton but the Kids’ DJ Fragano swam a fast 100 and cinched the 94-81 win for the Kids.

Tuesday’s home meet against Allentown Central Catholic was a close meet throughout with both the girls and the boys teams trading leads with Central throughout the meet. Northampton’s Jack Kennedy had a close race in the boys 100 backstroke event as Kennedy edged out Nathan Harris from Central by 7 tenths of a second for a first place Kids win.

In another nail biter, Northampton’s Brynne Rockovits claimed a first place victory over Central’s Grace Shucavage in the 100 butterfly. Rockovits out-touched Shucavage by just 6 tenths of a second.

The K-Kids face on more meet before the winter break as they welcome Saucon Valley High School on Thursday, Dec. 20, at 4 p.m.
