For the Catasauqua boys’ basketball team, it truly is a process.

The Roughies lost their second all-time leading scorer and returned a team with a handful of seniors and a promising group of sophomores.

As a result, time will tell.

Catty entered this week without a win in their first four games of the season. They have dropped games to Nazareth (80-34), Bangor (73-47), Palmerton (82-54), and Salisbury (63-49).

However, Catty (1-4) notched its first win of the season with a 51-40 victory at Pen Argyl Monday night.

Derek Troxell led the team with 19 points and Derek George had 12 points.

“Derek George had a nice game on the boards for us,” said veteran head coach Eric Snyder. “Jason Schneck had a great game off the bench and hit some big shots. Andrew Martinez had an excellent defensive and floor game.

“They’re interesting. The kids are great and resilient. They play very hard.

“It really is about gaining experience.”

Snyder sees a major hurdle for his team is maintaining steady shooting.

“We haven’t shot that well,” said Snyder. “We have missed a lot of opportunities, and we haven’t been able to convert. We have played good in spurts and in halves.

He also realizes his team has to tighten things on the other side of the court.

“Every team seems to have their best shooting game against us,” said Snyder. “Bangor shot the lights out against us.

“We also have to stop teams using dribble penetration against us. That has hurt.”

On a positive note, Snyder has been impressed with the continuing, improving play of George in the middle.

“He (George) has done well in the middle,” said Snyder. “He rebounds and moves well. (George) also has a nice midrange jumper. He really has exceeded expectations.”

Snyder also has been pleased with the play of fellow sophomore Donovan Walakovits, who has shined on the JV level and is making the transformation to varsity. Sophomore Ty Reitz had been battling a nagging back injury.

With a young team, it will be an evolving issue. They host Southern Lehigh Friday in search of their second win.

“They really all have done whatever we have asked of them” said Snyder about his team. “They all have stepped it up and it has been a good team effort.

“If we keep playing hard and are in some tight games, we are hopeful that we can pull some out and pick up some wins.”
