CHS sixth
Catasauqua High School’s cheerleaders placed sixth in the Game Day Division of the Colonial League Cheerleading Competition last Wednesday night at Catasauqua High School.
“For our first year in competition, it was a really good experience,” said Catty head coach Mikesha Calhoun, who is assisted by Nikki Treiber. “There is a learning curve for us.”
The Rough Riders just missed placing by five points.
“They hit their stunts really well and their energy was at an all-time high for them,” Calhoun said. “I had to leave and cry.”
The squad of 18 opened their routine with music and a “Let’s Go Roughs” chant. Next was a defense cheer, followed by a cheer with stunting and signs. The routine ended with a band dance.
“My favorite part is the dance because it’s our fight song, and it represents the team,” said Catty senior captain Ana Zappacosta. “It looked like everybody was having fun with it.”
Wilson won the competition in both the Game Day and Competitive Divisions.
Since Catasauqua High School hosted the event, the Rough Riders cheerleaders were responsible for setup, concessions, and breakdown.
“We taped and vacuumed the mats, cleaned the floor, and made all the food last night,” Zappacosta said.
The Rough Riders’ season is near conclusion with a pep rally and the Turkey Day football game, both next week.
