Catty falls to NHS in powder puff game
Catasauqua’s Amy Huber was ready for her recent powder puff clash with Northampton, but she and her teammates were caught a little off guard.
With the game at Northampton, the host Konkrete Kids instituted a new 7-on-7 format instead of the traditional 11-on-11 among some other changes in the format.
The Roughies battled, but they fell in the high-scoring, 62-44 clash on Nov. 4.
“We really didn’t know about the changes until late,” said the senior. “It was a back-and-forth game all night and we had two or three scores called back because of penalties. They (Northampton) had about 50 girls and we had 14.
“It was different and our coaches did a great job in preparing us in a short time.”
Kyle Martell, a youth football coach, served as head coach for the girls. Martell decided to take over the reins especially with stepdaughter senior Allanah George playing in the contest. Former head coach and head baseball coach Steve Bradley retired after his daughter, Kenzie, graduated last year.
“They were looking for a coach,” noted Martell. “With Allanah (George) there, I decided to step in. I grabbed a couple of youth football coaches. We did the best we could with three weeks to prepare.
“Northampton decided to change the format and we had to deal with it.
“But the girls had a blast. The final score surely made it enjoyable for people who were watching it. The girls did a great job in a short time to prepare.”
George also enjoyed herself.
“It was really fun and I liked it a lot,” she said. “It was something different from I would do. The 7-on-7 was different and I would have liked the 11-on-11, but it was a good experience.”
The fellow senior saw a competitive side for both teams.
“Absolutely,” she responded about being competitive. “We really wanted to beat them. There was one girl who scored a lot of their touchdowns. It did get a little intense.”
George also welcomed the lighter moments in which many girls forged new friendships.
“There were a lot of girls who I never played a sport with or against,” she said. “It was a good time with the and we made some new friendships.
“I never had done something like this,” added Huber. “It was a great experience.”
