The Lehigh County Humane Society rescued more than 130 animals Nov. 6 from a home in the 200 block of Fifth Street in Whitehall Township.
Humane society officials were called to the single two-story home around 4 p.m. by Whitehall Township Police Department.
Humane society officer Barbara Morgan said the home’s occupants had been evicted but were found to still be living in the garage, when police were called Nov. 6.
Township police found 133 animals - from dogs to fish - in the home, garage and yard, prompting them to call in the humane society.
Morgan said the house was in “deplorable condition” when she arrived, and a menagerie of animals in various conditions were found all over the property. She said there were holes in the floor, forcing her to step on the floor studs to avoid falling as she assessed the animals.
“There was a very large iguana walking about on the sofa and a bird cage with four doves,” she said. “There were toads, tanks with eels, turtles and other kinds of lizards, and even a scorpion.”
She said there also were four cats inside the home and two dogs outside.
An inflatable pool in the yard held 66 koi, a type of ornamental carp.
“The water was so thick and green, you couldn’t tell if anything was actually in there,” Morgan said.
She said some of the animals looked sickly and are being assessed by the humane society. Morgan said animal cruelty charges are pending.
Once the animals are assessed, all animals that are medically cleared will be available for adoption.
