Andrew Martinez knew his senior year would be different.

This summer, he found out just how different it would be.

Martinez was indoctrinated to lead a triple-option offense under new head coach Mike McClarin, an offense he previously has not seen.

Through 10 weeks, Martinez has done an above-average job at running the show, and he has one last shot in his high school career on Thanksgiving morning.

“I was a little confident with it at the beginning of the year,” said the senior quarterback. “But around the Notre Dame, things got interesting.

“I think the offense built a lot of character for all of us because we all had responsibilities with it. Everybody worked hard, and we knew it was going to be a process.”

Through 10 games, Martinez has 449 yards rushing with six touchdowns in the run-first offense. He also thrown for 386 yards, completing 25 of 88 attempts with five touchdowns and six interceptions.

On defense, he has been among the Roughies’ leading tacklers all season.

“He (Martinez) has done a phenomenal job with the offense,” said McClarin. “This was a huge responsibility and he has done a great job overall. He has been finding the holes and seeing what is opening down field.

“Defensively, it seems like he is all over the field.”

Martinez figured it would take some time.

“There was a lot of things to adjust to,” he said. “But I was getting used to it each week. Once I became confident with everything, I thought things went well.

“Defensively, I thought I was all right. When I look back, there were some balls I could have made plays on. I probably could have picked off a few of them.”

Martinez mad the adjustment form being a receiver, a position he made most of his football life.

His most memorable game this season was their lone win against Wilson, in which the Roughies rallied from being down 13 points with less than two minutes to play.

“I’ll never forget that,” stated Martinez. “It showed what we are capable of doing. We were in a number of games, but then we shoot ourselves in the foot. Turnovers hurt us all season. We just had to keep on executing.”

Martinez is looking forward to the annual Thanksgiving Day showdown with Northampton. However, he is planning to play college football next season, and he already has offers from numerous schools. He again will play basketball in the winter and baseball in the spring.

“I always look forward to the game and I am glad to be part of such a great tradition,” he said. “I have been contacted by coaches to play next season and I’ll go where I have the best offer.

“But we have to play on Thanksgiving first, and hopefully, we can get a win.”
