Judging Catasauqua’s football season simply shouldn’t be on wins and losses.

Instead, it should be viewed in the picture of a young team growing along the way toward next season.

The Roughies ended their regular season with a 61-27 loss to Northwestern last Friday night and finished with an overall 1-9 record. Now, they will await Northampton on Thanksgiving morning.

From the start, Catty has trouble stopping a rolling Northwestern squad (8-2) that had won five of its last six games and clinched a district playoff berth in the process. Quarterback Devon Bollinger fired two touchdown passes and ran for another to help the Tigers to a 28-14 advantage in a fast-paced opening quarter.

Northwestern amassed 498 yards of total offense.

“They (Northwestern) have been playing well, and they have a great quarterback,” said Roughies’ head coach Mike McClarin. “We were able to move the ball on them and put up some points early.

“But we weren’t able to slow them down.”

The Roughies did receive stellar performances from seniors quarterback Andrew Martinez and also running back Wil-Quon Clemons, who returned to the lineup from an injury.

Martinez ran for a team-high 117 yards, scored a pair of rushing touchdowns, and threw for 44 yards, while Clemons ran for 74 yards and ran back an 88-yard kickoff return for a score.

“It definitely was fun at the beginning,” said Martinez. “We were competing with one of the best teams in the league.”

“Andrew Martinez had another phenomenal game for us,” added McClarin. “He has really adjusted to our offense. He continues to show that he can play college football next year.

“It was good to get Wil-Quon (Clemons) back. He always brings another dimension to this team. (Clemons) does whatever he needs to do for the team.”

McClarin credited the play of junior running back Jacob Smith (four carries, 36 yards) as well as the offensive line.

“Jacob Smith ran the ball hard for us again, and he made some plays,” said McClarin. “Our offensive line stepped up to the challenge against them (Northwestern). They came at us with some different looks and they have had a lot of things thrown at them this year.

“They (offensive line) are young and they are getting better. We lose a senior in Brad Panto, who was a great leader for us and did it all out there. But these guys will get back into the weight room in the offseason and they will be stronger and better all around.”

Heading into the Thanksgiving Day game, Clemons lead the team with 582 yards rushing and five touchdowns while Martinez had 449 yards with six touchdowns.

In their run-based offense, Martinez has completed 25 of 88 attempts for 386 yards with five touchdowns and six interceptions. They are averaging 206 yards of offense per game, 158 on the ground, and scoring an average of 13.3 points per game.

Defensively, the Roughies are allowing 405 yards per contest and 47.3 points per game.
