Over the final two weeks of the season, Catasauqua head girls’ soccer coach Chris Hain noticed some issues with attrition with his squad.

Yet, the Roughies still had enough drive and determination to overcome any physical problems.

“Over the last two weeks, the girls have really give everything they have,” said head coach Chris Hain about his squad. “We may look a little tired physically, but they still have a lot of heart and drive.

“Their heart and soul in the play has been there all year long.”

It is that level of determination that carried the Roughies into a PIAA District 11 Class 2A playoff berth at Tri-Valley Thursday afternoon. The Roughies (6-10-2) gained the final and sixth spot in the bracket and will meet the third-seeded Bulldogs (13-5).

Catty entered the game without an extensive view if their opponent. Yet, Hain believes his club’s success simply will be based on their record.

“They (Tri-Valley) didn’t play any of the teams we played,” said Hain. “We have been trying to get some background on them.

“People will look at our record and believe that we didn’t have a successful season. But I saw things on the field that made it a good year. It just wasn’t about wins and losses.

“We’re a young team that is moving in the right direction. In all of my years coaching, I couldn’t have been around a better bunch of girls.”

Freshman Haleigh Toto has been the team’s leading scorer with 29 goals and junior goalie Madison Hicks has been a stalwart in the nets with 260 saves. Toto was a Colonial League Honorable Mention Choice, while Hicks received First Team Honors.

Along with the duo, Hain also cited the play of seniors Allanah George, Amy Huber, Trinity Kern, Taylor Richards, and Hailey Baez.

“The seniors have been great leaders, and they have been our best players all year,” he said. They have done an outstanding job.

“Haleigh (Toto) has a terrific knack of finding the net and she has really grown as a player. Madison (Hicks) has been phenomenal for us all season and has made a number of key saves.”

Huber sees Hain as being a major factor in a culture shift in the team.

“Under (Hain), I believe we can go far,” said Huber. “The change in our coach this year has been such a positive outcome.

“He (Hain) totally understands us, and I have never been taught in such as way. He had really connected and explains everything so we understand everything.”

If the Roughies win, they will advance to play second-seeded Moravian Academy in the semifinals.

With a newfound chemistry this season, the Roughies are looking for an extended stay in the postseason. They were eliminated by Moravian Academy in the opening round last season.

“If our team shows up and we are working up to speed, I think we will go farther than we did last year,” added Huber. “We’re going in against Tri-Valley, and we can’t let their record scare us. I really think we can compete with them and go far into districts.
