Cross country team ready for postseason

Editor’s note: We’ll have results of the Colonial League meet in next week’s edition.

For the Catasauqua cross country team, it has been a momentous year.

They also can continue to build on it.

During the regular season, the girls’ team won nine meets and the boys’ squad captured five meets.

Head coach Kyle Rusnock believed the Roughies’ success was a record one. From the start, Catty has been on a steady incline. The Roughies will have 37 runners in the postseason.

“Both teams haven’t been this type of success for a long time,” said head coach Kyle Rusnock. “(Assistant coach) Dave Burker has been around the program for a long time, and he can’t recall either team getting this many wins in a season.

“We did well against schools our size, we held our own against the larger schools. It is tough to compete with the bigger schools, but our kids really ran hard.”

The Roughies participated in the Colonial League meet at DeSales Tuesday, and they will run at the District 11 meet at Bethlehem Municipal Oct. 24.

“It will be tough for us in the league meet,” added Rusnock. “The league really has a lot of good runners.

“But we should do well at districts where it will be a better situation for us.”

Lexi Rushatz continues to pace the girls’ team. She consistently has been among the top 10 finishers and has netted several in the top five.

“She’s (Rushatz) really peeking at the right time,” said Rusnock. “She has been very steady and has been keeping a great pace. She is tough to beat.”

Sabrina Kemmerer also has been a regular contributor along with Lucy Brubaker, Montana Muller, and Ashley Ritter.

“Sabrina (Kemmerer) has really lowered her times and has been right there,” said Rusnock. “Brubaker, Muller, and Ritter all run in a pack and they are solid for us.’

Bradshaw Henning recently has set the pace for the boys’ team. Sebastian Henry, Matt Smith, and Jason Schneck also have been fluid.

“Those guys have been near the top for us all year long,” said Rusnock. “We’re looking for them to keep lowering their times.”

Rusnock saw his team round into form early in the season.

“Ever since our home meet in September (11th), we have really run well,” he said. “Everyone has really brought it every week. It has been exciting to see them perform, and we know we are not finished.”
