Donald Hillman, L.U. professor; owned STC

Donald Hillman, 86, died recently at St. Luke’s Hospice House. Born in London, England, he survived the blitz on London. He was the husband of the late Susan Hillman for 58 years.

He graduated from Cambridge University and the University of Pennsylvania where he earned a Ph.D degree.

He was a professor of computer science at Lehigh University . He owned Systems Technologies Corporation. He was instrumental in the early development of artificial intelligence.

He fought in the Korean War and was commissioned as a captain upon his discharge. He spoke four languages, shook Winston Churchill’s hand, was a painter and a cook, and played guitar and piano.

He is survived by three daughters: Stephanie of Bethlehem, Lisa and her husband Mark Piegza of Hilton Head, S.C. and Jennifer and her husband Patrick LaFrankie of Newark, Del.; six grandchildren; Alexandra, Charles, John, Claire, Aidan and Stewart; and two nieces; Susan Goldstein and Michele McLaughlin.
