Tennis sitting at 6-6 on season
Northampton tennis continues to fight through a tough schedule with strength and determination as their 6-6 record overall lends little insight into the level of play the team rises to with each challenge.
There is one thing head coach Kim Davis will tell you about his team: “We play hard.”
“That is one things the girls know I expect and we always do,” he said.
NHS is 5-6 in league play. The team has faced tough competition, playing some of the top teams in the league including Whitehall, Parkland and Emmaus, and while the result is not always an overall win, Davis is generally pleased with the effort of this team.
Northampton met Whitehall on Sept. 20, and the story was very much the same. The singles teams fought hard but fell in the first two games with Whitehall’s Natalia Pedraza defeating Northampton’s Liz Hozza at one, and Rose Sharga from Northampton falling to Whitehall’s Noel Yacoub at two. The third singles game was a battle but in the end, Northampton’s Grace Tepes defeated Whitehall’s Lanaa Roberts in three sets 3-6, 7-5, 6-4.
Northampton found its legs in the doubles matches with two wins. The second doubles game showcased the duo of Kaylee Kauffman and Kasey Zelienka with a decisive win over Whitehall’s Queena Lin and Emma Garneau (6-0, 6-0). The third doubles game was much of the same for Northampton with the Kids’ Amelia Cesanek and Maddie Nika besting Whitehall’s Emily Tran and Marina Fayez 6-2, 6-0.
While Whitehall won 4-3, the end result may not give a full picture of how well the team is playing, nor how hard the girls are fighting.
“They are fighters and they don’t give up,” said Davis.
Northampton will welcome Parkland for a home game on Sept. 27 at 3:30 p.m. then travels to Central Catholic at Cedar Crest College on Saturday, Sept. 29.
