LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Salisbury up next for Catasauqua

With their win over Wilson last week, the Catasauqua again will be in a favorable spot, facing an opponent with a similar record.

The Roughies will travel to Salisbury Saturday afternoon to face a Falcons’ squad with an identical 1-4 record. Salisbury was defeated by Notre Dame, 55-21, last Friday night.

“Salisbury is a pretty good football team,” said Roughies’ head coach Mike McClarin. “They have some good, explosive players.

“It will be different because we are playing Saturday afternoon. This gives us an extra day to prepare, but we know this will be a tough test for us.”

Salisbury began the season with a pair of defeats to Pen Argyl (17-16) and Northwestern (28-14) before they rallied to beat Wilson (21-7). They then dropped a 42-27 decision to Saucon Valley.

The Falcons are led by quarterback Jacob Kamp, who has thrown for 348 yards and four touchdowns. Kamp also doubles as a rushing threat, as he is their second leading rusher with 179 yards behind Tim Buda (289 yards).

Catasauqua is led by Wilquon Clemons, who has 246 yards rushing with four touchdowns. Quarterback Andrew Martinez had 166 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns.

Martinez had completed 19 of 51 attempts for 290 yards and four touchdowns. His prime target has been Adam Reinhart, who has 12 catches for 145 yards and a touchdown.

“Andrew’s (Martinez) has been getting better every week,” said McClarin. “He has been a real leader for us on both sides of the ball.”

Catty has averaged 15.6 points per game and 204 yards of total offense, 136 of them on the ground. Defensively, the Roughies have allowed an average of 41.2 points per game and 347.2 yards of offense, 311 of them have been on the ground.

The Roughies are in the favorable part of their schedule, as they will return home the following week to host Palmerton, which also entered this week’s play with a 1-4 record.

McClarin sees his team as closing the gap to play a complete game.

“We’re close,” he said. “We had a letdown in the second quarter (against Wilson). We asked them to dig deep at halftime and they did.

“We’re fighting and we’re getting there.”

PREDICTION: The Roughies are riding high and believing in themselves. Salisbury can put some points on the board and they have stayed close in most of its games. Catty’s offense again will need to be in another gear, and their run defense must be in a bend-but-not-break mode.

If they can force a few turnovers, it will be an easy ride back home. Roughies 24-19.
