Catasauqua has reached the point of the season where something has to give.

The Roughies, who fell to 0-4 with a 54-22 loss to Palisades last week, will meet winless Wilson (0-4) at Alumni Field Friday night.

Both teams have struggled to find consistency offensively, losing key members from last year’s cast. Defensively, they both have young players in key positions learning along the way.

For the Roughies, turnovers were the key against the defending Colonial League and district champion Pirates. Three first-half fumbles allowed Palisades to gain control at halftime.

“We had a good start,” said Roughies’ head coach Mike McClarin. “But then we had a case of mistakes. We fumbled a few times in the first half and we found ourselves in a hole.”

Catty pulled to within 7-3 on Devon Troxell’s career-best, 43-yard field goal after Trey Gretzinger rambled 71 yards for a touchdown on the game’s first play.

From there, however, the Pirates took advantage of the Roughies’ turnovers and marched to a 48-9 advantage at halftime.

Wilquon Clemons, who finished with 95 yards, broke free for a 56-yard scamper in the third quarter and later scored on an 11-yard run in the fourth. Quarterback Andrew Martinez also found the end zone for the Roughies, as he scored on a 62-yard sprint in the third quarter. The Roughies finished with 219 yards rushing.

“Wilquon is playing a different position as he is playing fullback as well,” said McClarin. “He has been getting the ball more. He is an incredible athlete and getting it all together.”

Wilson is coming off a 31-14 loss to Northwestern, and the Warriors trailed 21-14 at halftime. Previously, they dropped a 21-7 decision to Salisbury and began the season with a 34-18 loss to Northern Lehigh and a 61-28 defeat to Palisades.

Quarterback Ben Hindmarch has been the heart of the offense as he has thrown for 394 yards and four touchdowns.

“They (Wilson) are a young football team like us,” said McClarin. “They are not as much of a running team as the ones we have faced so far. They are going through the same types of things that we are.

“Defensively, we match up with them well. They are not as big as Palisades. They do have some good skill people and can move the ball.”

McClarin will be looking for his team to play a solid football game.

“Last week, we played three quarters,” he said. “We have to play four good quarters of football and we haven’t done that yet.

“We’re coming to work every day and this is a great opportunity for us this week. If we can pick up a win, it would give us a huge lift and be good for the program.”
