Girls soccer picks up a win

On Tuesday Sept. 17, the Catasauqua girls’ soccer team hosted Notre Dame in a midseason clash. The Rough Riders were hoping to end their recent, three-game losing streak.

They lost to Saucon Valley (0-4), Bangor (0-1), and most recently to Southern Lehigh (0-3). This was a pivotal game to get their season back on track after having been unbeaten in the first three games of the year.

While Notre Dame was coming into this game off a recent loss to Moravian Academy (0-5) the Spartans also needed a win to get back to their winning ways.

It was a wet and rainy Tuesday afternoon, but the weather didn’t stop Catasauqua from coming out hot. The Rough Riders scored three goals within the first 20 minutes of the game, one of which was scored by sophomore Kaitlyn Weiss.

Notre Dame stayed in the game and kept playing hard despite being down three goals. The Spartans came out in the second half inspired to get back into this game.

They put the pressure on Catasauqua constantly throughout the second half, but the Rough Riders hung on to keep a clean sheet. The defense and goalkeeper, junior Madison Hicks, helped see out the win. Notre Dame fought hard but Catasauqua prevailed and ended its losing streak.

After the game head coach Chris Hain felt that the whole team played great.

“All-around, it was great, especially the defense. Our defense has been strong all season and they showed it last game and today,” Hain said.

The Rough Riders last game was a tough loss against Southern Lehigh, but Hain’s feels that game, and the win against Notre Dame, has shown his team’s true colors.

“Southern Lehigh was a tough loss to a good team, but I thought we played great against them. And today we played just as good,” he said.

The Roughies will need to keep playing well because they have a tough week ahead of them. Their next games are away at Moravian Academy (5-1) on Sept. 18 and at home against Salisbury (4-1-1) on Sept. 20. Coach Hain believes his team can compete in these upcoming games.

“If we play with the same intensity and keep possession of the ball, like we did in the past two games, we can compete and beat anybody,” he said.
