Girls soccer sits at 2-1-1
As they head into the height of their season, Catasauqua’s girls’ soccer team will face some challenges.
After Tuesday’s postponement against Lehighton due to rain, the Roughies had a 2-1-1 record and will face a hectic month of games ahead.
They will need to battle through some injuries, most notably losing freshman scorer Brielle Davis to a broken leg.
“We have had some injuries,” said head coach Chris Hain. “But we have to be able to play through them the rest of the season.
“Brielle (Davis) was one of our better scorers. That one hurt.”
Despite the loss of Davis, Hain believes his maturing team can surge forward. Fellow freshman Haleigh Toto is the team’s leading scorer with five goals and she had a total of 10 in two scrimmages.
Along with Toto, Hain cited the play of freshmen Taylor Hicks, Aidan Gehhard, Sydney Gebhardt, and Madison Harth. Senior Trinity Kern also has been playing well.
“Haliegh (Toto) has really stepped up her game, and she and (Davis) have been very effective,” said Hain. “We have a decent amount of young girls starting and playing. We are basically a young team. We have six seniors, and they have been doing a good job.”
Hain has been reading his club well. After a 3-3 tussle with Pen Argyl, he gave his team a day off and they responded with a 4-1 win over Wilson before they suffered a 4-0 shutout to Saucon Valley.”
“We had a very tough game with Pen Argyl,” said Hain. “They are a good team, and they came to play. It took a toll and we had a day off. I think we needed that.”
The Roughies will resume play this week with games at Bangor Wednesday and then host Southern Lehigh Friday. From there, it is basically a three-game week until the season ends in mid-October.
Still, they plan to deal with any hurdles and will look to return to the district playoffs after they failed to qualify last year. The Roughies began the week seeded fourth in the 1A bracket.
“We just need to keep on working,” said Hain. “We have practiced well and we are getting good results. We know we have some to play at a high level.”
