It was another tough afternoon for the Whitehall field hockey team as the early part of their schedule has been loaded with some high-powered offenses that have left them winless after three games.
To date, the Zephyrs have played Easton, Emmaus and Pocono Mountain East. Those three teams combined for 59 wins last season. Additionally, those three teams are undefeated this year, and Whitehall found out just how potent the Cardinals’ offense is during their home game last Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinals struck for seven goals, with senior Jaiden Wittel scoring four of those tallies. The elder Wittel (her sister, Jacey, scored two goals), was like an unstoppable force in front of the net. She could extricate herself from those tight spots in front of the cage and wheel around and fire a winner, or she could weave her way through defenders and let loose a cannonading shot.
During one stretch in the second half, goalkeeper Logan Bortz made three successive saves at close range, but PME’s attack was relentless until one eventually slipped past to make it 5-0.
Through three games, the Zephyrs have yet to score. In the loss to PME, they weren’t able to generate a corner or get a shot on goal.
It continues to be a tough roster of opponents early in the season as they’re scheduled to face Moravian this week. Moravian won 18 games last season. The Lady Lions have always been a tough matchup for the Zephyrs. Last year the Zephyrs won on a penalty stroke in overtime.
