Editor’s Note: This article has been updated since the Aug. 29 issue in print. Western Salisbury Elementary School will continue to be closed Aug. 29, 30 and Sept. 4 for additional air quality remediation. The school is expected to open for kindergarten orientation 8:30 to 1 p.m. Sept. 5; grades one through five will have a two hour delay with a 3:15 p.m. dismissal. Transportation for kindergarten is expected to run as originally planned for the orientation day; lunch will be served, breakfast will not; the day care schedule is expected to run as usual at WSE. Parent teacher meetings scheduled for Sept. 4 and 5 at WSE are expected to be held as originally planned.
The following letter regarding an air quality/mold issue at Western Salisbury Elementary School was shared with WSE parents/guardians Aug. 24 via School Messenger from Superintendent Dr. Randy M. Ziegenfuss. Western parents/guardians should pay careful attention to the change in plans for the opening of school. All other district schools opened as planned Aug. 27 and 28.
“Dear Parents and Guardians,
“This message is to inform you of an air quality/mold issue at Western Salisbury Elementary School and changes in the opening of school schedule.
“As a result of the issue, professional air remediation and cleaning is needed and is occurring at this time.
“The opening week of school at Western Salisbury Elementary has been modified:
“Monday, Aug. 27 – Kindergarten Orientation – Postponed
“Tuesday, Aug. 28 – First full day of school for kindergarten through fifth grade – Postponed
“Wednesday, Aug. 29 – Kindergarten Orientation – 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Grades first through fifth – 2-hour delay with regular 3:15 p.m. dismissal. Transportation for kindergarten will run as originally planned for Aug. 27; lunch will be served, breakfast will not; daycare schedule will run as usual
“Thursday, Aug. 30 – Full day of school for all grades (same as originally scheduled)
“We realize this is an inconvenience and disappointment as we enter the 2018-19 school year, and we hope you understand the safety of our students and staff is our top priority.”
For your students at Salisbury High School and Salisbury Middle School who are anxiously awaiting the return of their school laptops, laptop distribution will be held Aug. 29 during homeroom. Don’t forget to bring a signed copy of the laptop agreement form and the check for the insurance payment. The laptop agreement form can be found at www.tl2020.org or copies will be available in homeroom.
I hope you all kept the Salisbury football schedule distributed with your Salisbury Press. Football season is here! The first home game of the season will be Aug. 31 vs. Northwestern Lehigh. Come out and cheer on our team. Go Falcons!
The Salisbury Township schools are closed Aug. 31 and Sept. 3 for the Labor Day holiday.
WSE is starting the year off with picture day Sept. 11. Also on Sept. 11 is open house for parents and guardians of students in kindergarten through second grade starting 7 p.m. Parents and guardians are encouraged to not bring children to the open house.
Sept. 14 will be an early dismissal day for Salisbury schools. SHS and SMS will dismiss 12:15 p.m. while WSE and Harry S Truman Elementary School will dismiss 1 p.m.
There will be no garbage collection Sept. 3 due to Labor Day. If Monday is your normal recycling day, your recycling will be picked up Thursday.
The Devonshire drop-off is open Sept. 1 and 4. The hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
