Golf, tennis teams earn early-season victories

While the majority of the sports teams kick off their seasons this weekend, the Northampton golf and tennis teams have already been hard at work.

The golf team, particularly, has played two, huge matches so far and has come away with victories over key teams in both of them.

The golfers have high hopes this season, but knew early season matchups against teams like Liberty and Parkland would go a long way toward reaching their goals in 2018.

On Aug. 16, the Kids went 4-0 in a match with Liberty, Easton, Dieruff and East Stroudsburg North. NHS shot a team total of 409 to beat the Hurricanes by 29 strokes.

Andrew Sawarynski led the way with a 78 at Woodstone Country Club’s par-72 course. Anthony Sawarynski had an 81 while Andrew Hozza and Andrew Kovalchik scored an 83. Nate Wheeler shot an 84.

Easton shot 475 while Dieruff and Eastburg each had 720s.

Northampton came up big again in another match with Parkland, Nazareth and Central last week.

The Kids shot another team total of 409 as they edged the Trojans who had a 410. The Eagles shot 434 and Central had a 448.

Anthony Sawarynski led the way this time, firing a 75 to lead all golfers. Hozza and Wheeler shot 81s and Kovalchik carded an 85. Andrew Sawarynski had an 87.

Most recently, the Kids defeated Pocono Mountain West, 428-550

Andrew Kovalchik shot 80 to lead the way. Riley Beenders and Andrew Hozza fired 84 and Anthony Sawarynski carded a 90. Nate Wheeler had a 90.

Pocono’s Tom Gaudette shot a match-best 78 at Woodstone.
