Gaming funds at work
North Catasauqua Borough Council is using funds received from Northampton County and the Sands Casino to make enhancements to borough hall.
At the Aug. 20 meeting, council approved a $4,855 renovation to the fire house to fit a new cascade air system. The fire department purchased the unit, which fills the emergency responders’ air cylinders, for $38,250 after its 24-year-old unit stopped working two weeks ago. However, modifications need to be completed to the fire house in order to get the unit in place.
The fire department has been using Catasauqua’s air system until the new one is installed.
Council also approved spending up to $5,000 to pour a new wall at the front of borough hall. The new wall will provide stability between the building and the steps and ramp leading up to it, in addition to beautifying the front of the building.
The borough received $31,000 through casino gaming funds from Northampton County.
In other business, borough officials have quarantined the property at 408 Buttonwood St. after signs that another sinkhole has developed in recent weeks.
The home was demolished in January when a sinkhole under the structure threatened to consume surrounding houses. After filling the hole and repairing the ground in the winter, recent heavy rains have caused another depression on the property.
The borough has erected a fence surrounding the area to keep people away, but it is up to the property owner to make the necessary repairs. Solicitor Steve Goudsouzian said the borough placed a lien on the property after the demolition in January.
The North Catasauqua Police Department handled 330 calls in July, including 100 vehicle stops, 12 reports of suspicious persons, 25 EMS responses and 19 fireworks complaints.
The borough’s fire department fielded nine calls in July, including two working fires. The department has welcomed eight new members over the last two months.
Bradley Panto, a rising senior at Catasauqua High School, was sworn in as the borough’s new junior councilperson.
Council’s next meeting is scheduled for Sept. 4, following the Labor Day holiday.
