Miller is moving up Mackenzie standings
Northwestern Lehigh graduate Cole Miller is nearly a full golf season into his professional career.
After graduating from Penn State in spring, Miller joined the Mackenzie Tour, which is Canada’s PGA Tour. With seven tournaments under his belt, Miller is 21st on the Mackenzie money list at $23,995. He has posted two top-10 finished and has finished in the top 15 four times. While most of the players ahead of him on the money list have played in eight or nine Mackenzie Tour events, Miller joined the tour a week into it’s season and took one week off to play in this year’s U.S. Open.
Last weekend Miller missed the cut for the first time, shooting 2-over par in the ATB Financial Bank Classic in Calgary.
Before last week Miller had finished no worse than 13th in his previous four events.
He shot -11 to take 12th place in the Suncrude Oil Country Championship in Edmonton on Aug. 2-5. Before that he took 10th place at the Osprey Valley Open in Caledon, Ontario, by shooting 15-under par.
Miller’s best finished came July 15-19 when he tied for fourth at the Stall Foundation Open in Thunder Bay, Ontario. He carded four rounds in the 60s (69-69-67-67) and finished at -19, three shots back of winner Ben Griffin (-22).
He cracked the top 15 a week before at the Windsor Championsip in Windsor, Ontario. There he was 17-under par and tied for 13th. He shot 70 to open the Windsor Championship and was barely in the top 100. He then fired rounds of 64-67-66 to climb up the leaderboard.
Miller’s Mackenzie Tour career started back in June when he played his first event just after competing in a US Open qualifier, where he earned his place in this year’s field at Shinnecock Hills.
After his first Mackenzie event, which happened to be across the continent in British Columbia. Miller placed 23rd in that event then flew east for the US Open on Long Island where he placed 98th, missing the cut by just four strokes. After playing with the world’s best in New York, he headed west again to compete in the Lethbridge Paradise Canyon Open in Alberta, where he shot -8 for 61st place.
If Miller can keep competing on the Mackenzie Tour and climb up that money list, he could earn a spot on higher level tours, like the Web.com Tour, which could lead to a chance at moving up to the PGA Tour, his ultimate goal.
