Upper Macungie police bid farewell to Deputy Chief Wilson

The July meeting of Upper Macungie supervisors opened with an award ceremony and recognition of members of the township police department.

A Distinquished Service Award was given to Deputy Chief of Police Joseph Wilson, one of the founding members of the police department.

Wilson is leaving to work for a firm which provides training and equipment for school safety.

Matthew Gardner received a promotion to sergeant. He also has been with the force since its formation.

The newest member of the force, Officer Drew Devery, was introduced to the audience and to the board.

Only two plans were on the agenda. A building expansion at Teirpoint and another at Hale Trailer Brake and Wheel were reviewed by supervisors. Both were approved by the board.

The Bureau of Fire report showed 71 fire inspections in June with a year to date total of 474. Emergency responses for Station 8 were 38, Station 25 answered 28 calls and Station 56 responded to 38 calls. Recruitment and retention had no members for Station 8, 4 new members for station 25 and 4 new members for station 56.

The planning commission reviewed the new revisions to the zoning ordinance concerning farm-based entertainment.

Supervisors are expected to review and possibly enact the ordinance at 7 p.m. Aug. 2.

The police report showed 856 calls for service in June with a year-to-date total of 5,107. Traffic citations were 344 with written warnings 124 and false alarms 117.

Most reported crimes for the period were disturbing the peace and DUI offenses with 15 each, and theft at 12.

The K-9 team went on four missions in the township and four in other jurisdictions.

The motor carrier program performed 76 inspections, with 92 violations discovered and 18 citations issued.
