Volunteers are needed for July 21 D&L cleanup

The public is invited to join the D&L Trail Tenders for a July 21 cleanup gathering at the North Catasauqua trailhead.

Once a month, Trail Tenders from across the 165-mile path gather at a select portion of the trail to remove trash and brush. North Catasauqua’s trailhead was chosen for July’s cleanup.

The event is scheduled to take place 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Volunteers are encouraged to park behind the North Catasauqua Public Works Department, 1460 Main St., and to bring water, work gloves and hand tools.

In other news from the July 16 North Catasauqua Borough Council meeting, the borough was awarded three grants to be put toward North Catasauqua William J. Albert Memorial Park and North Catasauqua’s fire and police departments.

The borough received $600 from Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce to install a wheelchair swing platform at the playground. The fire department was awarded $1,000 from The Clark Foundation, and the police department was given $500 by Whitehall Area Chamber of Commerce toward the purchase of a new computer.

The North Catasauqua Police Department handled 321 calls in June, including six criminal mischief complaints, six suspicious person calls and 97 vehicle stops.

The police department handled 17 emergency management calls, and the borough’s fire department was called nine times.

The law committee submitted its first draft of a revised public park ordinance. Topics in the revised ordinance include the use of motor vehicles, the allowance of pets and the designation of smoking areas. Solicitor Steve Goudsouzian will review the draft and advise on its compliance with state regulations.

The next council meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Aug. 20.
