Hain named CHS girls soccer coach
Somehow, Chris Hain appeared destined to coach at Catasauqua.
Over the years, Hain has been involved with youth soccer groups in Catasauqua, and he was approached about applying for the head girls’ coaching position when it opened in 2015.
This spring, Hain was again suggested to apply after there was an opening this spring. He did, and recently was named the head coach replacing Randy Gillespie.
It will be his first high school head coach position.
“I have worked with high school girls on the club level and with camps,” said Hain, who has an extensive youth soccer background over the past 10 years. “I do know some of the younger girls coming into the program, but not really the older ones.
“I want to learn these players’ strengths and weaknesses before I develop a style. I believe you have to play to a player’s strengths. It will help me with the tactical and technical approach.”
For the previous 10 years, Hain has worked with girls from ages 2 to 17 in the Lower Macungie Youth Association. In addition, he has been the South Parkland Youth Association technical director since 2016.
He also is the founder and technical director of the BoxtoBox Academy, and holds a National Soccer Coaches Association of America level 6 diploma, NSCAA national license, and a U.S. Soccer Federation E license.
Hain had 44 girls initially sign up, and he will take a realistic approach.
“The first year will be a learning curve for me,” said Hain. “We want to learn and then play. So far, we have had commitments from about 25 of them. I’ll lean on the older girls to take the lead. We’re looking to have about 25 players this fall and maybe more.”
Even though he isn’t totally concerned with the overall record, Hain believes his team can overcome some hurdles. Last year’s team finished with a 6-11-2 record.
“I looked at the schedule and where we were last year,” said Hain. “I don’t see any reason why we couldn’t do better. We have girls who are impressive and willing to learn and compete.
“It is not just about teaching soccer, but it is also about teaching life lessons to them. I’m looking forward to the season.”
