Catty girls hoops having encouraging summer

For the Catasauqua girls basketball program this summer, it is all about the numbers.

To their benefit, they have been positive.

“Everything has been going well,” said new head coach Mark Seremula in reference to the summer program. “We have had a really good turnout.

“We had about 15 girls who came to the games and we have been competitive.”

The Roughies have been playing in the Catasauqua Summer League and will also play in the A-town Throwdown this weekend. They also have a junior high team in the Cementon League.

Seremula also was pleased with a recent three-day clinic that stressed different aspects of the game. DeSales head men’s coach and former Whitehall standout Scott Coval was among the guest speakers.

“We had about 20 kids each day,” said Seremula. “We also have had the same amount for our weight training and open gyms. There is a real interest among the girls.”

The Roughies return incoming seniors Cassie Barna, Allanah George, Amy Huber, Julia Lacey and Taylor Richards from last year’s 4-18 team.

“We will count on them for leadership,” said Seremula. “They have done that so far. They all know they have to step up their game this winter.”

Seremula has been impressed with an incoming freshmen class. Among those who have excelled are: Trisha Bloszinsky, Aidan Gerhard, Taylor Hicks, Bronwyn Pacchioli, Ashley Ritter, and Haleigh Toto.

“They are very athletic,” said Seremula. “We will have a good group of freshmen and they will have opportunities to earn spots. They have been thrown into the fire. I would expect to see a number of them to see varsity minutes.”

Seremula stated the open gyms will run through the end of July and the season will end in the playoffs.

He also has begun to make strides with the youth program through clinics, an important pipeline to the program.

“I came into the program late, but we will have more things in place next year,” he said. “We already have started building.

“We want the younger players to come to us knowing what to expect and not have it be 100 percent new. We want to focus on the fundamentals being taught at a young age and then take it from there.

“We have a good feeling about these girls and we’ll be ready to go.”
