What do the following events have in common - Coffee with a Cop, free lunches for kids and sports camps and clinics?

The answer is Holy Trinity Memorial Lutheran Church, 604 Fourth St., Catasauqua, which hosts or sponsors many community activities in the borough.

Coffee with a Cop was back at Blocker’s Coffeehouse, 309 Front St., Catasauqua, June 21. This was the second event and was well attended.

“It’s nice to chat with the chief, the mayor and some of the officers. We did have one person bring up a concern she had. That’s the reason we have the event,” said the Rev. Brian Riedy, Holy Trinity’s pastor.

“We might have a pizza or ice cream event this summer, but we’re still going to call it Coffee with a Cop,” he said.

The church, in partnership with Suburban North Family YMCA, also sponsors a free lunch program Mondays through Thursdays at the borough pool, 501 American St.

“We usually start lining up the kids around 11 a.m., and everyone gets something for lunch,” Riedy said, adding there are no requirements for kids to participate.

“Some of the kids are on programs at school, but they don’t have much over the summer,” Riedy said.

The kids get the word about the free lunch from staffers at the YMCA, 880 Walnut St., Catasauqua.

There was also an end-of-the-school-year announcement about the free lunch program.

In addition, there is an ongoing baseball camp and a basketball clinic going on at the playground during the summer.

The church receives donations for some of the events, but a source of revenue is the church’s yard sale. The June 23 yard sale was well attended.

“What we are trying to do is create a community within Catasauqua. You don’t need to be a church member. This is just people in the community looking out for others in the community,” Riedy said.
