South Whitehall police, members of the public works water department and Cetronia firefighters were called out June 6 to help a lost family at the intersection of Cetronia Road and St. Luke’s West End Medical Center, South Whitehall.

A mother duck had her ducklings out for a stroll through the neighborhood when suddenly all of them disappeared.

After a careful search by South Whitehall Patrol Officer Kevin Azar, and Jeff Baker, fitness trainer at St. Luke’s West End Fitness Center, the babies were found in a storm drain near Cetronia Road.

Cetronia firefighters soon arrived and entered the drain to locate the missing ducklings.

The drain system at that location is a confluence of multiple drains and the ducklings beat a hasty retreat from their intended rescuer, firefighter Shawn Peischl.

Azar contacted the township and asked the water department to send a crew to help open a manhole cover.

Once opened, Peischl entered and found all six ducklings in a huddle.

A small box was used to transport the ducklings to the surface.

In the meantime, the mother duck had fled the scene, returning to their home in the large drainage pond along Broadway.

The ducklings were taken to the area and the mother duck immediately recognized her family and escorted them back to the pond.
