WHS girls play well
It was a successful weekend for the Whitehall girls basketball team as they made a big splash at the annual Cedar Beach Basketball Showcase in Allentown.
They went 4-2 and finished among the top-five in the Bash at the Beach which brought together 17 teams from the northeast to the asphalt courts in the Queen City.
As a result of finishing the tourney with a winning record, newly hired head coach Josh Madas said that they accomplished one of their goals heading into the Bash at the Beach.
“We had a goal to make it to Sunday and be competitive,” said Madas.
Madas also said that they played hard and there was a lot to be proud of once their weekend tourney was completed.
They worked their way through the consolation bracket after losing to Dunmore High School on Saturday, finally succumbing to Nazareth, the eventual champs, on Sunday to end their tournament run.
That run included wins over Emmaus, Boyertown and Dieruff which got them into Sunday’s afternoon tilt against the Blue Eagles.
Madas said their determination and grit were big reasons why they made it as far as they did in the highly-competitive tourney.
“To be in that spot, almost to the very end, was a great accomplishment for us,” said Madas.
It was made all the more impressive by the limited time they had together, beginning with the Patti Heffner Summer Classic a few weeks ago.
Madas said that the whole weekend was defined by their grit and how hard they fought the entire tournament. With the sun beating down on the asphalt courts for most of the weekend, the teams had to endure the heat as they played multiple games over a span of a few hours. Madas said that it was exhausting for everyone, and to see them dive after loose balls and get after it defensively, he came away with a good feeling about their competitive spirit and desire.
“We really showed some heart,” said Madas. “That can go a long way.”
That heart will be something that can serve them well as they prepare for the rest of their summer schedule which sees them back at Cedar Beach July 13-15 for the A-Town Throwdown.
He said he was equally impressed with how well they played together. He said the focus wasn’t so much on individual performances but how well they’re playing as a whole. And in that respect, he said he was very pleased.
Whitehall began the tourney with a 6 p.m. game against Pleasant Valley on Thursday to tip off the Beach Bash. Grace Clary was en fuego from the start, knocking down seven points within the first few minutes to stake the Zephyrs to an early lead. She finished the contest with 13 to help them defeat the Bears 38-24.
They also had big wins against Emmaus, downing the Green Hornets 27-14. That put them opposite Boyertown B, advancing with a double-digit victory. Finally, they toppled Dieruff 27-21 to earn their fourth win.
