The Lehigh Valley Carpenter Cup team completed the first day of the Carpenter Cup Softball Classic with a 1-0 victory over Tri Cape and a 4-2 loss to Berks-Lancaster Lebanon on Monday at FDR Park in Philadelphia.

In the first game, Lehigh Valley and Tri Cape were scoreless until the sixth inning.

“It was nerve-wracking because we were all getting big hits but we weren’t scoring,” said Lehigh Valley first baseman Kylie Hlay (Parkland), who hit the game-winning double that scored Mya Zettlemoyer (Allentown Central Catholic) who had also hit a double.

“That was the motivation going up to bat,” Hlay said. “The count was 1-0 and the pitch went right down the middle, and I hit it to left center.”

Abbey Sechler (Parkland) had two singles in the game.

Kelly Dulaney (Parkland) pitched the first four innings for Lehigh Valley, and Hannah Palinkas (Emmaus) pitched the last three.

“I felt pretty good. My screwball and curveball were definitely working,” said Palinkas. “Mya was catching, and it was good because on one of my previous teams, she would catch me all the time.”

Palinkas worked her way out of the seventh inning with Tri Cape runners on first and second base for the Lehigh Valley win.

“I’m pretty used to that, and I know my team is behind me,” she said.

In the second game, Lehigh Valley took a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

Zariah Alvin (Easton) was hit by a pitch, Zettlemoyer had a bunt single, and Emily Silberman (Salisbury) hit a double.

“I had two strikes, but I knew I had to get the ball into the outfield somehow to get runs, and she threw me a curveball,” said Silberman.

Silberman also pitched in that game.

“I knew I had our defense behind me, so I was confident,” said Silberman, who felt that her curveball and change up were her best pitches on Monday.

“It was really exciting, and a lot of fun getting to know the girls. We had a break between the first and second game and had time to get to know each other better.”

Berks-Lancaster Lebanon scored one run in the second inning, two runs in the third inning, and one run in the fourth.

Lehigh Valley will resume its place in the double-elimination tournament on Wednesday.

“[Coach Blake Morgan] told us that the fact we’re moving on to Wednesday is what we should focus on,” Silberman said.
