Andrew Torres wants to keep playing baseball and keep boxing as long as he can. It has proved to be a perfect combination.

Chances are, the Catasauqua sophomore won’t have to meet any crossroads for a long time.

Torres found his niche midway through the varsity season and he hasn’t lost a step. He hurled a complete game victory against Bangor, a seven-strikeout, three-RBI performance.

He landed a spot in the Roughies’ rotation, but has been effective out of the bullpen for the Roughies’ entry in the Connie Mack League this spring. Torres has a 2-0 record with 1.82 ERA and a team-high 13 strikeouts. He also is the team’s representative for the league’s all-star game.

“He has continued what he started during the season,’’ said head coach Jim Kober. “Andrew has been doing a phenomenal job and he has been lights out. He has been my closer and he’s getting it done.”

Torres hasn’t been fazed with the change. Instead, it is just about completing the task for the confident righthander.

“It has been working out better than I expected,” said Torres about the change and the season. “The change hasn’t been a big adjustment. I like the pressure. I know I am good under pressure and I can handle it. I know it is my game the last two innings.”

Torres credits pitching coach Dakota Schiffer and the rest of the coaching staff for creating a sense of comfort.

“(Schiffer) had really worked on different grips and pitches I can use,” said Torres. “He really has helped me along. This is such a great coaching staff and there is a great chemistry here. It has been a lot of fun.”

Torres also has been helped by his older brother Alex, who was a standout a few years ago for the Roughies. He and his older brother, who both began playing the game when they were very young, were pioneers in the sport for their family.

“We are the only ones in the family,” said Torres about playing the sport. “But both of us are very dedicated to it. It has been a great sport to us and maybe we can pass it along to other family members.”

As for boxing, Torres also began at a young age. In his baseball offseason, Torres boxes as often as he can. He not only loves the sport, but he also sees it as a perfect complement for baseball.

“It (boxing) helps me keep my focus,” he said. “(Boxing) also helps me to stay in shape and I feel a lot better about myself. My metabolism is much better because of it. I want to keep boxing as long as I can.”

With his recent results on the diamond and his passion for boxing, Torres should be able to continue to register some timely knockouts down the road.
