The Reverend Monsignor Anthony D. Muntone
The Reverend Monsignor Anthony D. Muntone, 81, died May 30, 2018, at Holy Family Villa for Priests, Bethlehem.
Born in Shenandoah, he was a son of the late Anthony and Assunta (Bruno) Muntone.
He was a graduate of J.W. Cooper High School, Shenandoah. He studied at Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary, Overbrook, and earned a Licentiate in Sacred Theology from the Pontifical North American College, Rome, Italy.
He was ordained to the priesthood July 12, 1964, by the Most Reverend Filippo Pocci at the Church of the Twelve Apostles, Rome, Italy.
His first Diocesan assignment was as parochial vicar at Our Lady Help of Christians Church, Allentown, and associate professor at Allentown Central Catholic High School. He was then named assistant chancellor, with residence at Immaculate Conception Rectory, Allentown and later diocesan chancellor and pro-synodal judge, Diocesan Tribunal.
His first pastoral assignment was at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Roman Catholic Church, Whitehall, where he remained until his retirement. During this time, he was appointed diocesan vicar general and moderator of the curia from 1988 to 1998.
He was a member of the Diocesan Liturgical Commission, chairman; Council of Priests-Diocesan Consultors, secretary; Committee for Priestly Formation; and Priest Personnel Board.
He was named Prelate of Honor to His Holiness by Pope Paul VI March 14, 1977, and Prothonotary Apostolic by Pope John Paul II Jan. 31, 1992.
He was the pastor emeritus at St. Elizabeth’s.
He is survived by a brother, John Muntone of Jersey City, N.J.; nieces; and nephews.
