David M. Anderson

Dr. David M. Anderson, 87, of Bethlehem and Mashpee, Maine, died May 15, 2018. Born in Boston, Maine, he was a son of Martin Jens and Dorothy (Finnin) Anderson. Hew as the husband of Marjorie Anderson.

He was a 1948 graduate of Boston Latin School. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from Northeastern University and a Master of Science and Ph.D degrees in Industrial Hygiene/Environmental Health from Harvard University.

At Bethlehem Steel, he was the environmental health engineer of the Department of Environmental Quality Control; became an assistant manager and then the manager. He retired as general manager of Environmental Affairs in 1994 after working for the company for 34 years. After retiring from the company, he was a consultant and expert witness on the health effects of exposures to mineral dusts, especially asbestos, in toxic tort litigation.

He worked in research at Harvard University and the U.S. Public Health Service for 10 years as an asbestos diseases consultant. At Harvard, he was a co-op student, a research fellow, a visiting lecturer and an advisor to the Harvard Center for Risk Analysis.

He was a public health engineer in the U.S. Public Health Service’s Division of Air Pollution, where he conducted a study of the causes and effects of air pollution in Pennsylvania, which was the technical basis for Pennsylvania’s 1960 Air Pollution Control Act.

He was appointed to many academic and government advisory posts in the 1960s and 1970s, and worked with Vice President Bush in his role as regulatory reform chief for President Reagan in the early 1980s.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children and six grandchildren: David R. and his wife Jane Anderson and their children Erik and Adam; and Michael M. and his wife Courtenay Anderson and their children John and Emma, all of Clinton, N.J.; Anne M. and her husband Paul Penkal of Harleysville and their children Paul and Julia; and Stephen G. Anderson of Bethlehem; and a brother, Gerald P. Anderson of West Barnstable, Maine.

He was predeceased by a sister, Joan Martin.
