For Catasauqua’s baseball team this season, it was all about timing.

Throughout the season, the Roughies suffered a series of untimely setbacks that eventually affected a possible district playoff berth. As a result, Catty ended its season with an overall 6-14 mark.

Head coach Steve Bradley recalled an event in his team’s final game of the season that reflected how they easily could be construed as being snakebit this year.

“We were trailing 6-5 and we lost a pop-up in the infield that could have ended the inning,” he stated. “Instead, they got a couple of runs.

“It was a microcosm of our season. Stuff like that would happen and we couldn’t respond like we needed to.”

Bradley noted how the Roughies’ troubles started at the beginning of the season when senior first baseman, pitcher Shane Dolan was lost for three weeks with a concussion. However, he did credit sophomore Mason Schlofer, who filled in admirably in Dolan’s absence.

“Losing Shane (Dolan) at the start hurt,” said Bradley. “He also would have given us another pitcher at the time.

“But Schlofer did a really nice job for us. He was among some of the younger kids who stepped us this year.”

Bradley cited the efforts of sophomore pitchers Jacob Drummer and Andrew Torres, both of whom matured throughout the season and raised their game.

“They both did a really nice job for us,” said Bradley about his future hurlers. “They got better and really developed. We’re hoping they can lead out staff next season.”

The Roughies will have some holes to fill, as they will lose eight seniors off the roster. Among the more notable ones that will be leaving will be pitcher/catcher Zach Bilder and third baseman/catcher Luke Creyer.

Creyer was named a second-team Colonial League all-star and hit .420 for the year.

“Luke (Creyer) has a hot bat all season,” said Bradley. “He can play anywhere and did an outstanding job for us. He did hit a legitimate .420.

“Zach (Bilder) also did a lot for us. For us to contend, he needed to win five games for us. He was consistent throughout the season and we needed to support him better.”

Bradley also praised the play of senior shortstop Corey Raysely, who has been a mainstay in the infield over the past four years.

“It is a shame that Corey (Raysely) didn’t get named to the league team,” said Bradley. “He is either the top defensive shortstop or the second-best one. (Raysely) was one of the hardest workers on this team.”

In the end, though, Bradley knew it would come down to reality.

“We knew we needed pitching,” he said. “We had inexperience at a number of positions, but our younger kids grew up along the way. We’ll miss this group of seniors, but everyone else has to take the next step.”
