After an impressive showing at the recent Colonial League meet, Catasauqua sent a strong contingent to the PIAA District 11 Track and Field Championships this week at Whitehall High School.

“We were very, very pleased with everything,” said head coach Kyle Rusnock. “All of the coaches did an outstanding job at getting the runners prepared. Everybody hit their PR (personal record).

“They were all ready to compete at a high level. We had a great work ethic”

Senior Tyra Brown, who was seeded second in the 100 and 200 at districts, finished third in both the 100 and 200 at the league meet. Brown finished the 100 in a time of 13.02 and the 200 in a time of 26.44, both enabled her to qualify for districts.

“Tyra (Brown) has worked very hard to get to this point,” said Rusnock. “She ran extremely well in both events, and she should continue to excel.”

Fellow senior Kenzie Bradley also had a busy day at the league meet as she captured the long jump in a mark of 18.03.75 and was second in the high jump with a state qualifying mark of 5-2. Bradley also managed a seventh-place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 33.08.50.

Brown and Bradley were also part of the girls’ 4 x 100 relay team along with Trinity Kern and Maddie Emery that produced a fourth-place finish in a time of 51.77. The boys’ team finished seventh overall in a time of 46.60.

“The girls ran very well,” added Rusnock. “All of our relay teams ran the best all season. The boys team (4 x100) had their best time. It was a good day for all of them.”

Senior Jacob Wittman finished second in the pole vault with a mark of 13-0. Rusnock was pleased with his effort, but expects him to improve.

“It wasn’t his best,” said Rusnock. “He (Wittman) was a little rusty. I know he will bounce back.”

Rusnock also cited the efforts of sophomore Tory Simmons, who finished seventh in the javelin (98-09) and freshman Lexi Rushatz, who held her own in the 800, 1,600, and 3,200. Rushatz’s best finish was in the 1,600 where she posted a time of 5:44.23.

The girls’ team finished sixth overall with a point total of 43.

“Our girls beat some team who they lost to during the regular season,” said Rusnock. “They did an outstanding job as did the boys.

“We have been having a great year overall, and we hope to continue.”

On Tuesday, the District 11 track and field meet was postponed due to the threat of severe weather.

The event is now scheduled to take place on Wednesday and Thursday at Whitehall High School, weather permitting.
