For Catasauqua, they got one that was desperately needed.

Derek Troxell’s walkoff single to right field was the final piece of a five-run seventh inning that lifted the Roughies to a 7-6 win over Northern Lehigh Tuesday afternoon.

The victory gave the Roughies an overall 5-11 mark and kept their postseason hopes alive.

Jayden June had three of Catty’s 12 hits, and Cam Ritter went 2-for-3 and knocked in a pair of runs. Corey Raysely went 2-for-4, and Zach Bilder was 2-for-3. June had an RBI-triple in the seventh, and Ritter had a key squeeze bunt.

Joey Kober threw four-plus innings, and Jacob Drummer finished for the Roughies.

“It was an exciting and nice win for us,” said head coach Steve Bradley. “Before that inning, nothing went our way.

“Derek Troxell hadn’t played an inning of varsity, and I decided to give him a start in left field. He did a great job in the field and at bat. Kober threw a good game for us, and Drummer closed it out.”

The victory snapped a six-game slide, their last being an 8-3 loss to Salisbury Monday afternoon. For the Roughies, their seesaw season has been due to their growth pains.

“We are very inexperienced especially when it comes to our pitching,” Bradley. “Zach Bilder is our number one guy and teams are ready for him.

“Right now, we really don’t have a number two guy. We have a number of young pitchers, but most of them are still not ready. We are throwing some of them into the fire.”

Bilder started for the Roughies Monday and found himself in a 3-0 hole in the first inning.

“(Monday) was a game we really needed,” added Bradley. “But we got behind early and couldn’t catch up. It is just the way it is.

“We don’t hit the ball as well as we could. We also have had trouble stringing hits together.”

Bradley also noted a 6-4 loss to Wilson as another heartbreaker. The Roughies couldn’t stop the bleeding after an early lead, and starter Andrew Torres hit the wall.

“We were up 4-0 (against Wilson) then we had to change pitchers. Torres ran out of gas.

We brought in two more pitchers and it went from being 4-4 to 6-4. From there, we couldn’t score.

“It was a tough loss and another game that we needed.”

Bradley credited the recent play of third baseman Luke Creyer, who has been a vacuum in the field and is one of the Colonial League’s leading hitters with a .425 average.

“Luke (Creyer) has done it all for us,” said Bradley. “He’s a fantastic kid and a real surprise for us. He is the type of kid who will play anywhere. He even asked me about pitching.’

Along with Creyer, Bradley also acknowledged the recent contributions of freshmen Tyler Monahan and Matt Ritter, both of whom are members of the track team and are helping in their free time. He also touted the contribution from sophomore Nathan Schlofer, who filled in admirably for Shane Dolan at first when he was sidelined with a concussion for two weeks.

With four games left, the Roughies likely will play out the string, but Bradley expects them to exert a good effort.

“If we win all four, who knows what can happen,” he offered. “But these kids give the best they can every game. I can’t ask for much more. Right now, our inexperience hurts us, but we still have a shot if we can get a few more wins.”
